นักฟังเพลงหลายคนคงคุ้นเคยกับชื่อ Cornelius เพราะเขาเคยมาเปิดการแสดงที่ไทยอยู่หลายครั้ง ในช่วง 10 ปีที่ผ่านมา
– ครั้งแรก ในปี 2005 งาน SOI Music เป็นการแสดงเล็กๆ สองรอบ ในอัลบั้ม Point (ร่วมกับ Spank Happy, Futon ,Saliva Bastards) ที่ house RCA เป็นคอนเสริ์ตที่ผมตื่นเต้นมาก ไม่นึกว่าจะมาไทย ไปดูมันทั้งสองรอบเลย เป็นช่วงที่คนไทยเพิ่งเริ่มรู้จักกับ ดนตรี Shibuya-kei ช่วงนั้นมีศิลปินอื่นๆ ที่ทยอยกันเข้ามาเล่นที่ไทยตามงาน Fat Festival ด้วย อาทิ FPM, YMCK , Kiiiiiii
– ครั้งที่สอง ปี 2012 งาน Big Mountain โดยมาในโปรเจคกับนักร้องสาว Salyu x Salyu (ผมรถติดอยู่ตรงเนินเขา ไปไม่ทันดูโชว์ ไปถึงเห็นเฮียแกกับคณะสาวๆเดินลงจากเวทีหมดละ..)
– ครั้งที่สาม ปี 2013 ที่ Centerpoint Studio ในนาม Salyu x Salyu อีกครั้งอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ (ฟินมาก)
หลายคนที่เคยฟังงานของเขา คงรู้ซึ้งกันดีถึงอัจฉริยภาพในความคิดสร้างสรรค์ทางดนตรีหัวก้าวหน้า ที่ผสมผสานดนตรี Avant-garde , Electronic , Jazz และ Pop music ได้แบบไม่เหมือนใคร
หนึ่งในผลงานสร้างสรรค์อันโดดเด่นของเขา เพลง “Star Fruit Surf Rider” ซึ่งนอกเหนือจากความวิจิตรของดนตรีและภาพแล้ว ความพิเศษคือลูกเล่นของแผ่นซิงเกิ้ลที่ทำมาเฉพาะสำหรับดีเจนี้ จะขายเป็นแผ่นคู่ ที่ต้องเปิดจากเครื่องเล่นสองตัวพร้อมกันของดีเจ เพื่อให้มิติของเสียงที่ประกอบกันเป็นตัวเพลงเต็มสอดรับกันอย่างครบถ้วนทุกรายละเอียด
งานของเขาถูกใจตั้งแต่เด็กแนวไปจนถึงผู้ใหญ่ โดยเฉพาะหมู่คนทำงานสร้างสรรค์ อย่างในแวดวง วงการเพลงโฆษณาที่ผมทำอยู่ทุกวันนี้ ทั้ง Composer และครีเอทีฟหลายคนนั้นเป็นแฟนของ Cornelius และมักจะได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากเขาในการสร้างสรรค์งานอยู่มาก เขาเป็นใคร ทำไมถึงใช้ชื่อว่า Cornelius? วันนี้เราจะพาไปรู้จักกับเขากันให้ดียิ่งขึ้น
วัยเด็กของ Cornelius
เคย์โกะ โอยามาดะ (Keigo Oyamada) เกิดที่เขต Setagaya-ku จังหวัด Tokyo วันที่ 27 มกราคม 1969 โดยมีแม่ที่เลี้ยงดูเขาหลังจากแยกทางกับพ่อตอนอายุ 8 ขวบ โดยเขามีวัยเด็กที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากพ่อที่เป็นนักร้องนักดนตรี ukulele ชาวฮาวายอย่างมาก ซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญที่ทำให้เขาสนใจในดนตรี ก่อนที่เขาจะมาค้นพบโลกของดนตรี Rock’n’Roll เป็นครั้งแรกตอนเรียนอยู่เกรด 5 จากแผ่นเสียงเพลง Love Gun วง Kiss จากญาติของเขา “ผมรู้สึกว่ามันเหมือนสัตว์ประหลาดในการ์ตูน”
หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน เขาเริ่มหัดเล่นกีตาร์ด้วยตัวเอง และเริ่มเล่น cover วง heavy metal อย่าง Black Sabbath เขาเล่น cover วงต่างๆ เยอะมากเป็นสิบวง ตั้งแต่ the Misfits ไปจนถึง the Smiths และเล่นตามงานต่างๆ โดยได้เริ่มต้นฟอร์มวงของตัวเองในชื่อ Lollipop Sonic ซึ่งทำให้ได้พบกับ Kenji Ozawa จนได้สร้างตำนานของ Flipper’s Guitar ให้เป็นที่จดจำ (ดังที่ได้กล่าวไว้ในโพสต์ที่แล้ว Flipper’s Guitar จุดเริ่มต้นของ Cornelius ผู้บุกเบิกดนตรีย่าน ชิบุยะ )
หลังจากความสำเร็จและแตกดับในเวลาอันรวดเร็วนั้น เส้นทางดนตรีของเขาและ Ozawa ก็แยกออกจากกัน โดยตัวเขาเองยังคงอยู่กับค่าย Polystar ซึ่งต่อมาเขาได้รับข้อเสนอของทางค่ายในการสร้างค่ายลูกของตัวเองในชื่อ Trattoria Records
ที่มาของชื่อ “Cornelius”
เขามีความสนใจในดนตรีป๊อปสากลเป็นอย่างมาก แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็โตมากับเพลงป๊อปญี่ปุ่นคลาสสิคด้วยเช่นกัน ด้วยความหลงใหลต่อภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวูด “Planet of the Apes” วันหนึ่งเขาได้ตั้งชื่อโปรเจคของตัวเอง โดยนำชื่อจากตัวละครในเรื่องมาใช้ นั่นคือ “Cornelius” อันเป็นการอุปมาอุปไมยดนตรีของตัวเองในแนว avant-garde แบบผสมผสานรูปแบบดนตรีหลายชนิด เปรียบเปรยกับตัวละครในเรื่องที่มีทั้งความเป็นมนุษย์และลิงอยู่ในคนๆเดียวกัน ซึ่งต่อมาเขามาค้นพบว่า Pierre Boulle ผู้แต่งเรื่อง ได้แรงบันดาลใจของตัวละครตัวนี้มาจาก นักโทษสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง ชาวญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งเป็นผลทำให้ Cornelius นั้นเป็นตัวละครที่เข้าใจมนุษย์ เข้าใจลิง และเข้าใจคนญี่ปุ่นอย่างลึกซึ้ง (แหม อะไรมันจะประจวบเหมาะกันขนาดนี้)
นี่คือ Cornelius ตัวจริง จาก Planet of the Apes เวอร์ชั่นโบราณ
นอกเหนือจากการเป็น Artist คือเป็น “Archist”
ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่นำชื่อของสิ่งต่างๆ จาก pop culture มาใส่ในเพลงหรืออัลบั้มเพียงอย่างเดียว แม้แต่ ทรงผมหน้าม้า เสื้อลายขวาง หรือแว่นกันแดดอันโตที่เขาใส่ ก็เป็นการนำสไตล์มาจากวง Velvet Underground จากยุค 60’s ด้วยเช่นกัน เขากับกลุ่มเพื่อนๆศิลปินหลายคน ได้บัญญัติศัพท์เรียก การที่ศิลปินนำเสนอความเป็นตัวเอง ผ่านทางการรวบรวม เสาะหา ตัด/แปะ ผสมผสาน สรรพสิ่งทางวัฒนธรรมเข้าด้วยกัน และนำเสนอออกมาเป็นตัวเอง ในลักษณะนี้ว่า “Archist” โดยในกรณีของเขา คือการนำสารพัดซาวด์แบบ psychedelic rock ยุค 60’s มายำกับ avant garde jazz ด้วยวิธีการ ตัดแปะเสียง sampling และเติมสีสันด้วยองค์ประกอบจากวัฒนธรรม pop culture ของภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวูดลงไป เสมือนการสร้างวงดนตรีออเครสตร้าในรูปแบบเฉพาะของตัวเอง ทำให้เกิดบรรยากาศแห่งโลกที่เขาสร้างขึ้นเอง

เส้นทางสายดนตรี ในชื่อของ Cornelius
ช่วงปี 1993 เขาได้เริ่มสร้างสรรค์งานของตัวเองในชื่อ Cornelius โดยควบคู่ไปกับการเป็นกำลังสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนกระแสดนตรี Shibuya-kei โดยได้ produce ให้กับศิลปินหลากหลาย อาทิ Pizzicato Five และแฟนสาวของเขา (ในตอนนั้น) อย่าง Kahimi Karie
ปี 94-96 เขาประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมากกับอัลบั้มส่วนตัวอย่าง Holidays in the Sun EP, First Question Award, 69/96, 96/69 (remix album) จนกระทั่งจุดสูงสุดของควมสำเร็จนั้นคืออัลบั้ม Fantasma ในปี 97 ที่ขายได้ถึง 500,000 แผ่นในญี่ปุ่น และสามารถเปิดตลาดในอเมริกากับค่าย Matador Records ใน New York ได้อย่างสวยงามอีกด้วย โดยได้รับคำวิจารณ์ในแง่บวก ถึงลักษณะงานในสไตล์ collage-rock ว่าเป็นเสมือน “Disneyland” ของซาวด์ดนตรี
หลังจากนั้นเขาได้พักการสร้างผลงานไปช่วงสั้นๆ ช่วงใกล้ปี 2000 โดยได้แต่งงานสร้างครอบครัวกับศิลปิน Shibuya-kei อีกคน นั่นคือ Takako Minekawa (เจ้าแม่ดนตรีป๊อปสายทดลองของวงการอีกคน) โดยมีลูกชายคนแรก ชื่อ Mairo (ซึ่งเป็นชื่อของลูกชายของ Cornelius ในหนัง Planet of the Apes เช่นกัน) ก่อนจะกลับมาทำอัลบั้ม Point ในปี 2001
Point อัลบั้มแห่งศักยราชใหม่ของ Shibuya-kei
พร้อมๆกับการมาของเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่ อัลบั้ม Point เล่นกับลูกเล่นของระบบเสียง 5.1 ที่ถือว่าใหม่มากในตอนนั้น โดยได้ออก DVD Audio-visual คู่กันกับอัลบั้มเพลง โดยได้เริ่มต้นการทำงานที่โฟกัสกับภาพเท่าๆกับเสียง ออกเป็นแผ่น DVD ที่นำเสนอภาพเคลื่อนไหวประกอบเพลงด้วยระบบเสียง 5.1 เป็นครั้งแรกของโลกที่มีอัลบั้มที่มีงานลักษณะนี้ออกจำหน่าย
“Drop” เพลงที่ว่าด้วย เสียงของหยดน้ำ จากอัลบั้ม Point ที่ใส่ใจรายละเอียดทั้งในด้านงานภาพและเสียงเท่าๆกัน
Keigo กล่าวว่า ใน Fantasma มันมีส่วนผสมต่างๆอยู่เยอะมาก แต่ใน Point เขาได้เลือกคัดกรองเอาเฉพาะ sound ที่จำเป็นเท่านั้น เพื่อให้ดนตรีได้หายใจมากขึ้น โดยอยากทำสิ่งที่มีความเรียบง่ายมากขึ้นกว่างานเก่าๆ มันคืองานที่เสมือนเป็นตัวแทนของเขาที่โตขึ้น มีความเป็นผู้ใหญ่มากขึ้น แต่ยังไม่ทิ้งลักษณะการทดลองผสมผสานทางดนตรีหลายแนวอยู่ และเป็นเหมือนกับภาพสะท้อนประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวที่เขาเติบโตขึ้นในเมืองใหญ่อย่างโตเกียว มีเสียง Ambient ที่สร้างบรรยากาศอยู่อย่าง เสียงนกร้อง หรือ หยดน้ำ
เขามี passion และความคิดสร้างสรรค์ ในการทดลองเสียงในรูปแบบต่างๆอยู่มาก มีคอนเสิร์ตหนึ่งที่เขาแจก headphone ให้กับผู้ฟังทุกคน และให้ใส่มันเพื่อดู live concert ไปด้วย โดยเน้นประสบการณ์แปลกใหม่ที่ผู้ฟังจะได้รับ ที่เป็นการผสมผสานทั้งเสียงจากหูฟังและจากลำโพงตรงหน้า หรือแม้แต่การใส่แว่น 3d เพื่อเสพย์ภาพไปด้วยขณะชม Audiovisual เพื่ออรรถรสสูงสุด
อัลบั้ม Point มันเป็นเหมือนการเปิดศักยราชใหม่ให้กับดนตรี Shibuya-kei ที่สไตล์แบบ traditional ของมันได้จบลงไปพร้อมกับยุค ’90 แห่งความเฟื่องฟู พร้อมๆกันกับที่ Pizzicato Five ยุบวง ในปี 2001 นี้เอง Cornelius ได้บุกเบิกซาวด์แบบใหม่ที่พัฒนาตัวเองไปอีกขั้น
Point อัลบั้มที่เปลี่ยนแปลงวงการ
ส่วนตัวผม (ผู้เขียน) คิดว่า Point นั้นคืออัลบั้มที่เป็นหมุดหมายสำคัญทางดนตรีของญี่ปุ่น (และของโลก) เลยทีเดียว โดยอัลบั้มต่อมาในปี 2006 อย่าง Sensuous อัลบั้มที่กลับคืนสู่ความเรียบง่ายงดงามของสีและเสียง ซึ่งออกพร้อม DVD Audio-visual อีกเช่นกัน ในชื่อ SENSURROUND ปี 2008 ซึ่งเป็นอัลบั้มที่มีคอนเสปว่าด้วย “สี” นั้นก็ยังคงยึดแนวทางการทำงานในแบบ Point ไปพัฒนาต่อ
งานต่อๆมาหลังจากนั้น เขาเริ่มสร้างโปรเจคร่วมกับคนอื่น หลายโปรเจค อาทิ
– ดนตรีประกอบเกมส์ “Coloris” ปี 2006 หนึ่งในซีรี่ย์ “bit Generation” Video game ของ Nintendo ในเครื่อง Game Boy Advance
– ร่วมทำดนตรีประกอบให้กับภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวูด Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ในบางฉาก
– โปรดิวซ์ให้กับศิลปินสาว Salyu อัลบั้ม S(o)un(d)beams ปี 2011 ในชื่อโปรเจคพิเศษ Salyu x Salyu (อ่านว่า ซาริว บาย ซาริว)
– ดนตรีประกอบ Anime series ชื่อดัง Ghost in the Shell ปี 2013
